Niko de La Faye

Collateral event of the Hong Kong International Photo Festival 2014

The exhibition presents a selection of works from Niko de La Faye’s Visages series, a two-year long photographic project conducted between Paris and Shanghai. De La Faye rejected the idea of a casting, and all models were volunteers. The shapes and colours added to the existing landscape of the human faces result in a fascinating collection of encounters with people.

A portrait is the representation of the way the artist sees his or her model. Here this representation is painted directly on the face of the person being represented, instead of being captured through the lens of the camera or depicted on a canvas. The camera comes in as the final layer in the sequence of representations of representations.
